Mary Pickford Legacy : Past Events

On Wednesday, September 14...
...film historian and Leona Valley resident Hugh Munro Neely will present a program on the life and work of Charles "Buddy" Rogers (1904-1999). "Buddy," as he was known by friends and fans, was an actor and musician, who appeared in "Wings" (1927) with Clara Bow, Richard Arlen and Gary Cooper; the first film to win an Academy Award for "Best Picture."  The preternaturally handsome young man from Kansas later appeared in dozens of popular films, opposite stars like W.C. Fields, Mary Pickford, Nancy Carroll, Mary Brian, Lupe Velez and many others.  As an instrumentalist and sometime vocalist, he founded the "California Cavaliers"  and "Buddy Rogers' Famous Swing Band" with which he recorded a number of hit records in the 1930's, including "Anytime's the Time to Fall in Love," "Moonshine Over Kentucky," and "This is Madness (To Love Like This)." In 1937, Buddy married America's Sweetheart, Mary Pickford. He served as a naval test pilot during World War Two, and produced films and television into the 1950s.  Hugh will present a rare screening of his 1997 documentary film about Charles "Buddy" Rogers, titled "Anytime's the Time to Fall in Love."  Hugh met Buddy on a number of occasions, during his work for the Mary Pickford Foundation, and after the film screening he will participate in an audience Q&A session and offer the audience a peek at Buddy's personal scrapbooks, which are part of the Foundation's collection.

The Mary Pickford Foundation, in association with the Mary Pickford Institute, sponsored two legacy grants this summer. The events were designed to support the presentation of classic Mary Pickford films, with live musical accompaniment, in communities across the country. Most events are presented free of charge to the public.

L.A.’s own 21st century composer Maria Newman’s penned a new score to this classic film - for an evening of entertainment from creative women that bridges two centuries.
