Los Angeles, CA - The Mary Pickford Institute for Film Education’s
President, Keith Lawrence, announced Friday their Mobile Film
Classroom is in such demand since its March 2007 inception
that funding for a second classroom has been secured, with
the additional roll-out scheduled for early 2008. “This
is a tremendously exciting opportunity to serve and empower
more people of all ages and backgrounds by helping them discover
that they not only have a voice, but one that is worthy of
being heard,” said Lawrence.
The Mobile Film Classroom was conceptualized and designed
by the Mary Pickford Institute as a unique educational opportunity
on wheels: a state-of-the-art classroom vehicle built to their
specifications. According to Lawrence, “Our idea was
to even the playing field of training. The equipment and staff
equals that of any professional or college setting in Los
Angeles.” By giving schools and organizations the opportunity
to provide instruction that would otherwise be cost-prohibitive,
the institute is able to reach underserved individuals within
the community. Kids and seniors alike are attracted to learning
and excited as they see the Mobile Film Classroom drive up.

Students take part in every aspect of production, both on and
off camera - from writing to storyboarding, performing, filming,
narrating and editing. The vehicle is equipped with twelve IMac
workstations, professional film editing software, recording
booth, digital video cameras, portable lighting and boom microphone
kits, and a library of stock footage and music.
Classes are designed to teach the art of filmmaking as a means
of telling stories; whether personal stories or public service
ads to educate peers about issues affecting home and school
lives. The program develops patience, encourages social consciousness
and emphasizes teamwork that translates into a sense of accomplishment
and higher self-esteem. In addition tocultivating an understanding
of and passion for film as a means of communication, skills
learned carry through to students’ daily lives and impact
their personal and professional futures.
The Mary Pickford Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated
to carrying forward Pickford’s wishes as a philanthropist
through her legacy as a movie pioneer, creativity and education.
The Mobile Film Classroom serves the community by working in
concert with other non-profit and educational organizations
to facilitate onsite, hands-on media instruction.
